Winter Driving Tips for Scarborough Roads

Winter Driving Tips for Scarborough Roads

Scarborough winters can be unforgiving — black ice on Kingston Rd, slush on the 401 ramps, and sudden whiteouts near the lake. Whether you're a new G2 driver or an experienced one, winter demands a different mindset.

Before You Drive

  • Clear ALL snow off your vehicle — including the roof and headlights.
  • Check tire pressure (it drops in cold weather).
  • Use winter tires — they make a huge difference below 7°C.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.

On the Road

Increase your following distance to at least 4 seconds. Brake earlier and gentler. If you start to skid, steer in the direction you want to go and ease off the accelerator — don't slam the brakes.

Watch the Hot Spots

Bridges and overpasses freeze first. Be extra careful on the Highland Creek bridges, the 401 overpasses near Markham Rd, and shaded sections of Kennedy Rd.

Visibility Matters

Use your low beams in snow — high beams reflect off snowflakes and reduce visibility. Replace worn wiper blades and top up your washer fluid with winter-grade fluid.

Practice With a Pro

If winter driving makes you nervous, a few lessons with a calm, experienced instructor can rebuild your confidence. Get in touch with Yusra Driving School to book winter driving sessions in Scarborough.
