5 Common Mistakes on the G2 Road Test (and How to Avoid Them)

Every week, students walk out of the Port Union DriveTest Centre disappointed — usually because of small, avoidable mistakes. Here are the top 5 reasons people fail their G2, and exactly how to fix them.

1. Rolling Stops

A "California stop" at a stop sign is an automatic fault. Come to a complete stop — wheels frozen — for at least 2 seconds. Count it out in your head if you have to.

2. Missing Blind Spot Checks

Mirrors are not enough. Examiners look for an actual shoulder check before every lane change, every turn, and when pulling away from a curb.

3. Driving Too Slow

Going 10 km/h under the limit is a fault. On Lawrence Ave or Kingston Rd, drive the posted speed when conditions allow. Slow driving signals lack of confidence to the examiner.

4. Poor Lane Positioning

Hugging the centre line, drifting toward parked cars, or cutting corners on turns all lose marks. Aim to keep your vehicle centred in the lane at all times.

5. Hesitation at Intersections

When it's your turn to go, go. Long pauses at four-way stops or unprotected lefts confuse other drivers and the examiner.

Bonus Tip: Practise the Routes

Examiners use a small set of routes near the test centre. Practising those streets with a local instructor is the single best way to prepare. Book G2 prep lessons with Yusra Driving School today.
